Psalm 46: 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Purpose Statement:

To minister to those who are serving in the military by encouraging them to grow in their faith to God through daily devotions and reading scripture, which we make available to them.  To let them know that our church supports them through regular written correspondence, packages and most of all prayers for each person listed on the “For Those Whom We Pray”.

What Is Military Ministry?

This is an outreach program in which letters, cards and useful gifts are sent to support our U.S. military personnel who are connected in some way to our church or to members of our church.  In this way, love and hope are given to these courageous men and women serving throughout our nation and overseas, many who are in dangerous and hostile locations. This ministry is under the direction of the Church’s Mission Committee.

About This Outreach Mission

The Military Ministry is an on-going mission under the auspices of the Missions Committee of the Sycamore United Methodist Church. The team is co-chaired by Phyllis Anderson and Midge Hartsuch. Meetings are generally on the third Thursday at 6:30 p.m. or an on-call basis for special projects. New ideas and members are always welcome.

How Can You Be A Part of This Mission?

Each person can:

  • Pray for those military personnel whom we list in the weekly bulletins and monthly newsletters.
  • Give us names, addresses and pictures of anyone you know serving in the military, and keep us informed of address changes.
  • Participate in special requests for shipping items to each of the military personnel.
  • As a group within the church, you can work with the ministry team to develop a more personal connection with those serving in the military.
  • Join the ministry team to continue to plan new ways that will support those who remain at home while their spouse or family member serve in the military.

Most Needed Items to Send to the Military:

Eye wash, lip balm, sunscreen, foot powder, bars of soap, toothpaste, baby wipes, aspirin, fabric softener sheets, nail clippers, fresh socks, undershirts, power bars or health bars, cookies and candy, packages of powdered cocoa, tea, coffee, juice drinks, deck of cards, hacky sacks, silly string, bubbles, Rubix Cube, squirt guns, comic books, paper back books, CD’s or DVD’s and greeting cards.

Bless the Lord, who is my rock, he gives me strength for war, and skill for battle. He is my loving ally and my fortress, my tower of safety, my deliverer. He stands before me as a shield, and I take refuge in Him. He subdues the nations under me. Psalm 144:1-2
